ETCHED ACRYLIC ON AN OLD AL MERRICK FISH

"New York City — despite it’s many green spaces — occasionally can feel a bit removed from the natural world.  For me, surfing at Rockaway became a form of catharsis, as did learning what the urbane city scape looked like pre colonization; when Times Square was a “forest with a beaver pond”, the Hudson teamed with whales and porpoises, and the original New Yorkers — the Lenape people — made their home on the Island of many Hills.  The amalgamation of the two became “Manahatta”, an etched topographical map of the landscape of Manhattan in 1609, before Henry Hudson sailed into what would become New York harbor."
